Boycott Wendy’s in DC

Join DC fair food and thousands of farm workers, students, people of faith and consumers of conscience in refusing to patronize Wendy’s until the world’s third largest hamburger chain joins Fair Food Program.

Why Wendy’s?
For over three years, farm workers and consumers have been demanding that Wendy’s join its major competitors – the rest of the big fast food chains- in participating in the fair food program. Yet, Wendy’s has instead consciously and shamefully opted to profit from farmworker poverty and abuse, continuing to cling to the low-bar standard of the past when presented with and acclaim and proven alternative.

Rather than participate in what was called “the best work-place monitoring program” in the US by New York Times, Wendy’s ran from the responsibility and abandoned the Florida tomato industry altogether.

In Response to increase pressure from consumers to join the Fair Food Program, Wendy’s released a new code of conduct for its suppliers, a perfect example of the failed, widely discredited approach to corporate social responsibility that is completely void of effective enforcement mechanisms to protect farmworkers’ human rights.

DC Fair Food Attends 9th Annual Rooting DC Forum

We were happy to attend the Rooting DC Forum for the second year in a row! This was the 9th annual forum hosted by DC Greens – Rooting DC is an all-day gardening forum that aims to provide education about urban food production and consumption, to cultivate health and preserve the environment. The program includes dozens of interactive workshops, cooking and food preservation demonstrations, and panel discussions focusing on youth gardening, nutrition, sustainable growing techniques, and healthy food access.

DC Fair Food hosted an information table at the entrance of the forum where we connected with participants, talked about our local food justice work and recruited enthusiastic foodies to attend the CIW’s Worker Voice Tour. We had a great time connecting with our local food justice community and look forward to attending again next year!

SFA is breaking up with Wendy’s to let them know we’re OVER IT. Let this be a reminder to Wendy’s of our national student boycott and that we will continue turning up the heat next month during the Workers Voice Tour

Web

Despite the growing and undeniable success of the Fair Food Program, Wendy’s has, time and time again, turned its back on workers and consumers calling for the fast-food giant to join the FFP, ignoring their letters, phone calls and protests.  Likewise, Wendy’s has turned its back on the Florida tomato industry itself.  Inexplicably, just as the industry was being called “the best working environment in American agriculture” on the front page of the New York Times for its commitment to the human rights standards of the Fair Food Program, Wendy’s moved its substantial purchases of fresh tomatoes away from Florida in early 2015.  That’s right, they affirmatively decided to buy their tomatoes from farms offering workers fewer protections.

Drawing on the long history of CIW Truth Tours that paved the way for the award-winning Fair Food Program, the Workers’ Voice Tour will build on the three-year-old Wendy’s campaign, partnering with students and consumers across the country to amplify the call for farm labor justice.

Report back: Happy Birthday, DC Fair Food!

With love and laughs, we came into our 5th year of life!

Thanks to all who joined us for the birtcropped-3phbannerhday party! You can still make your donation to the 2016 youth leadership Encuentro here!

We started off the night with some yummy dishes featuring veggies from Three Part Harmony Farm. The farm’s December CSA share is now available!  Donations of horchata and chips were made by Taqueria D.F.  We definitely ate well so thanks to all the farm workers, food producers and volunteers involved!

The night was also special for the photos and videos of past actions. One of the videos we watched featured some DC Fair Fooders breaking up with Wendy’s last February, even trampling on hearts! So cute!

It reminded us all of the importance of the donations made in order to send the next wave of leaders to el Encuentro, the 2016 CIW leadership conference in Florida. If you didn’t get the chance to donate last night, please do so! Youth are our future and they will ensure that the Fair Food program continues to growUntitled drawing (1)

With DJs, Alfredo Castro and Lupedeluxe, mixing all night and a very sturdy piñata, we managed to have a good time! Thanks for joining us and we hope to see you at the Spring Action!

DCFF & 3 Part Harmony Present to Washington Youth Garden

20150722_140834 (1) 20150722_141135 (2)
Written by Gail Taylor and Jennifer Ristau
On July 22nd, Gail Taylor, owner and operator of Three Part Harmony Farm (3PH) and Jennifer Ristau, a member of DC Fair Food, co-presented an informative talk to the thirteen Green Ambassadors Program interns at the Washington Youth Garden in D.C.
Taylor talked about how proud and fortunate she is as a small vegetable farmer to follow in the footsteps of organized farmworkers from the UFW to CIW. On a local level, 3PH offers the progressive, conscious, activist community a way to consume good food. By speaking to young folks who are engaged in learning about how plants are grown and where vegetables come from, Taylor and Ristau had an opportunity to teach them about an important aspect of the food system at large: who grows the food we eat? In other words: who feeds and sustains us every day? As someone who has been supportive of all of the CIW boycotts beginning with the “No Quiero Taco Bell” campaign, Taylor wanted to start a farm, in part, so that she herself and those around her would not just have a list of places where they couldn’t eat, but would also have an alternative place to buy and support locally grown, healthy food. Says Taylor, “I hope the young folks were challenged to think more about the human beings that work so hard every day to make sure food ends up on our plates. And perhaps my model of becoming a small part of the local food system opens up their minds to the idea that we can make our own future by creating our own alternatives.”

In addition to Taylor’s talk about the creation of an anti-oppressive food system here in D.C., DC Fair Food representative,Ristau, spoke to the importance of solidarity with theCIW.

To learn more about the struggle of farmworkers in Immokalee, Florida the interns participated in a popular education production using a human pyramid to simulate the power dynamic between farmworkers, supervisors and those with the most political power in the agricultural industry when the CIW was forming – corporate supermarket owners. The simulation showed the high barriers to farmworker organizing and how the CIW’s Fair Food Program could change the tyrannical nature of the food industry. The participants discussed how and why the food system is unfair and also saw how recent immigrant farmworkers direct the movement to hold U.S. corporations accountable.

The workshop brought to light many important ways in which the organizing of Immokalee workers can be supported here in D.C. Particularly, with the current campaign to “Boot the Braids” boycott of fast food chain, Wendy’s; the last of the five large chain restaurants who have yet to sign the CIW’s Fair Food Program contract.

Three Part Harmony Farm produce is available through a Community Supported Agriculture (weekly subscription box) program, at Pansaari grocery store in Dupont Circle, and through a work exchange program at the farm. Contact gail for more info: gail at threepartharmonyfarm.com

The Green Ambassadors Program is a paid, six-week internship for individuals of 16 years and older who contribute their gardening, teaching and food skills to courses for younger community members at the US National Arboretum.
